Conceptual AD: I’m excited to be developing a short mixed-media documentary exploring the origins of SAMO, the street-based body of work co-created by Al Diaz and Jean-Michel Basquiat in late-1970s New York City.
Years before Basquiat’s friendship with Andy Warhol, there was Al Diaz, his closest friend and creative partner, a relationship Mr. Diaz has described as a brother-like bond. Together, they created SAMO, using language and public space to deliver social commentary meant for society at large.
This project will blend animation, archival imagery, photographs and documentary storytelling. I’m honored to have Mr. Diaz’s guidance on this project. This is a conceptual video advertisement only, and I’m looking forward to letting the full piece evolve visually over time. More soon.
